The Isle of Wight Fairtrade Forum has over the last few years campaigned to obtain Fairtrade Status for the Isle of Wight, making it a Fairtrade County in October 2005.
This has been achieved by a small group of dedicated people, each year the status has to be confirmed by ensuring that the requirements as defined by the Fairtrade Foundation are met. These include support from the council, major employers, the required ratios of shop and cafes etc providing two or more different Fairtrade Products.
There are a number of locations throughout the country which have obtained Fairtrade Status or working towards the status, these areas are supporting the ethics of 'fair trade' where suppliers are paid a fairer price for their goods and efforts. See latest list
